Can my chip be repaired?
Your technician makes the final call. These are the guidelines we work to.
| In front of the driver | Smaller than a $1 coin (15mm), including any cracks running off it. |
|---|---|
| Passenger side | Up to the size of a $2 coin (30mm), including any cracks. |
| Distance from the edge | At least 3cm in from the edge of the windscreen. |
| Shape and history | Star-shaped chips repair best. Bullseye chips and glass with earlier repairs are harder. |
| Cameras | A chip in front of the safety camera may mean a new windscreen. |

How a chip repair works
- Your technician checks the chip to confirm it can be repaired.
- Dust and loose glass are cleaned out of the chip.
- A vacuum and pressure tool draws the air out and pushes resin right through the damage.
- A UV light hardens the resin.
- The surface is cleaned and polished.
It takes about an hour. The chip stops spreading and is much harder to see, though it can still look like a dried raindrop.
Cost and insurance
With full glass cover, a chip repair may cost you nothing, and we can lodge the claim for you. Without insurance, it costs much less than a new windscreen.
You get a certificate showing the repair meets WOF standards. If a repair ever cracks the glass, its cost goes towards a new windscreen.
Taking a photo of the chip
Put a $2 coin next to the chip for scale, and take one photo from the driver’s seat showing where it sits.
